36 Weeks, Day 2 – Prepping Toddlers for a New Baby

Books for toddlers

If this is your second or third pregnancy you know how important it is to prep your children for the arrival of the newest member of the family. Children need to be included in family talks before the arrival of the baby. As I’ve stated in my past blogs, toddlers and kids of all ages can be affected by the addition of a newcomer, especially when it comes to pheromones. Open discussions prior to the birth is very important; it lets them express their feelings and emotions and allows you to show them you care about them as much as the new baby. You never want them to feel as though the new baby is more important or that you will love them any less. Here are some ways to help prep younger children with the arrival of a newborn:

Pick a time daily to have detailed talks about the baby. Our family includes this in our nightly routine prior to going to bed. We pray for the baby and talk about whether it is going to be a boy or a girl (we don’t know the sex).
If you know the sex of the baby, tell them. Refer to them as he/she. As our toddler is just turning 2, he knows where the baby currently is and guesses each night as to the sex of the baby.
If you have a name for the baby tell them that as well and refer to the baby by name. He also knows the two possible names we have chosen. As he can’t pronounce the names clearly we’ve managed to keep the names a secret.
Tell your kids you love them and will still love them once the new arrival comes.
Plan one on one time with your kids prior to the birth and do something special with them. You can do this with both parents at the same time or separately. While you are spending time together, again discuss the upcoming changes and how this may affect them and their feelings.
For younger kids, gather a collection of books related to babies and read to them, especially during the last month of the pregnancy. The picture above shows the books that I have been reading to my son. I have provided the list below.
Explain what the baby will do when it arrives. From sleeping to feeding/nursing to changing.
Explain what their job is when the baby is born. The need to be gentle and quiet. Tell them they can help by holding the baby and getting diapers. Find ways to make them feel as though they’ll be responsible for some aspects of the baby’s life.
Show your toddler pictures of their own birth and talk to them about how it was when they were a newborn.
Have a birth present ready for them at the hospital. When they arrive to visit you and the new baby, make sure they have something they can leave with to take their mind off the fact that you aren’t leaving with them.
If you have any friends or relatives with a baby, try to have your child spend time with their baby to help further prep them.
Purchase a doll and show your child how to care for the baby. From holding to bathing to feeding, help your child understand appropriate behavior.
Explain to your toddler who will be watching them once you’re in the hospital. If it’s someone who doesn’t watch him/her often, have them over so that the two can become familiar with one another.
Have your toddler spend more and more time with just daddy. This will help when your hands are full during the first month with the newborn; your toddler will be used to daddy instead of you all the time.
Create a Boobie Box to occupy your toddler while you are nursing.
Have your toddler hold the baby as much as possible to strengthen the bond. Pheromones are emitted from the baby’s head and will help your toddler love the baby sooner.
