No news on the pregnancy front.

In honor of my friend whose due date is today, I decided to blog about naturally inducing. “SR”, who I will refer to by her initials only to respect her privacy, has already had discussions with her sister and then myself when we briefly talked about naturally inducing. From the sounds of it, her sister and I did the same thing and both of us successfully and naturally self-induced before having our doctors force us into going to the hospital to be induced.

To be induced at the hospital means that you’ll be given a synthetic form of oxytocin known as pitocin, which will help the body to begin to generate contractions leading to giving birth. Normally your body produces oxytocin, which begins contracting the uterus and starting your labor.

From the numerous articles I’ve read and women I’ve talked to about receiving pitocin, very few enjoyed their experience. For starters, if your body and your baby aren’t ready and your doctor tells you that you have to take pitocin to speed things along, doesn’t something blatently stand out to you? Your body and your baby aren’t ready! Receiving pitocin before your cervix has ripened and your baby is ready means that it will take a lot of time for your body to catch up to where the pitocin is leading you to be. Hence, many women are in labor for hours and hours while receiving pitocin, laying in a bed and waiting for their body to catch up, their cervix to be ready, and contractions to be generated. All of those things need to be in sync and are being forced into working by a synthetic drug. Hmmmm, sounds like fun.

Pitocin doesn’t always work either. When it doesn’t work, more than likely you’ve been in labor for 15 hours or more; things have started to work but then stop, then start and then stop, and then the baby is at risk as it wasn’t ready to be born, yet everyone is pushing for him or her to come out. The mixed signals that they are receiving-plus having the mother totally exhausted-result in having to have a c-section. Now that really sounds fun. Why didn’t I opt for that? Oh, wait, I was being told I would have to do that but then chose my natural alternative.

You can naturally self-induce yourself and if your body and baby are ready, you will begin labor. If your body and baby are not ready then you won’t begin labor and you will not have harmed yourself or your baby, nor will you have caused undue stress. If you are serious about self-inducing, research online, talk to your acupuncturist, talk to your local homeopathic doctor. They will all help you in making your decision. Remember, you are in control of your body. No doctor has the final say. If he or she is telling you to be induced you can tell them no–you will not be in trouble. Don’t worry about pissing off your doctor. You have full control. Don’t leave the hospital saying that you didn’t have a choice–you always have a choice. Whatever choice you make is yours. Stand behind it. Don’t blame anyone if you choose to listen to others in your decision making process. Go into this with full knowledge of what you feel in your heart you want to do, commit to it, and proceed forward. I chose to self-induce.

My story~
It begins back in late September 2007. I knew I was pregnant. I knew exactly the moment I conceived as we were charting and keeping very good records. I went online to several pregnancy sites and popped in my first day of my last cycle and, voila!, there was a due date of May 30, 2008. Repeatedly, similar sites told me the exact same date. I didn’t feel like this date was correct. I told my husband and he said, “It is just a guesstimate of the day so you’ll probably be early or late…blah, blah, blah.” I knew that already. I just didn’t like this date for some reason. I needed a “for sure” date. One that seemed right. So, I used Naegle’s Rule of determining my due date. Calculate the first day of your last period then subtract 3 months and add 7 days. That lead me to a knew due date, June 6th. That was the date. I told my husband that our baby would be born that day and he laughed at me. Jump ahead 10 months as I sit in my doctors office on June 4th. My doctor is telling me I have to be induced. He won’t let me go beyond a week of being late. I tell him I want to wait and let the baby come naturally when the baby is ready. The baby is in position and I’ve had mild contractions but I’m not even dialated. My doctor insists on scheduling something on June 5th. On top of that, my doctor will be out of town over the weekend and that would lead me to having to use the doctor on call, a doctor I don’t want as he frowns upon natural deliveries and loves to give episiotomies to women without their concent and kicks out doulas all of the time. Now I’m stuck. Give up my natural birthing procedure and get induced so that I can have my doctor there just so I don’t have to deal with the alternative. I was a bit stressed. My husband and I sit in his office as he tries to schedule me to be induced on the 5th. I wanted to scream. I wanted to shake my fists at the universe and say, “This isn’t fair! I’ve planned everything and now this? These are my only options?” The universe was in my head and heard my pleading. My doctor got off of the phone and told us the hospital was booked on both the 5th and the 6th. He said that we would have to schedule the induction on Monday, June 9th when he was back. I told him that was fine all the while knowing I had another option. I could self-induce. I now had time to plan. We left his office and went to eat dinner, eggplant parmesan (eggplant is suppose to help jump start things!). As we ate, I told my husband my plan. I said, “If we take the entire day off tomorrow, June 5th, and I use the self-inducing herbs, go for a hike, get an inducing pregnancy massage and continue to eat eggplant, I know I can be in labor and give birth before our doctor leaves town.” He looked at me like I was insane. “Okay,’ he said, ‘Whatever you want to do, I’ll do it with you.” I knew this was a long shot but I had to try everything in my power to make this happen. So, off we went to the mall to buy a new pair of sneakers. While at the mall I decided to let down my guard and actually sit in one of those seated massage chairs where they have 4-5 people working on several people at once, in front of everyone, at the mall. Uhh. I would have never done such a thing normally, but that night I didn’t care. I told them to hit all of the pressure points to help me induce. And they did. I felt some contractions right away. Then it all subsided as we walked to the car. We put our plan in place for the next day. Up early and to the herb store to buy the herbs, then on to a 2-3 hour hike, home for an eggplant lunch, then off to my inducing massage, home for an eggplant dinner, then a bath before bed.

The next morning I bought my herbs and continued to use them throughout the day. We went for the hike. I had a glorious massage then went home to eat the last of my eggplant Parmesan. I was running around finishing up cleaning and my husband tried to tell me to stop and to take it easy, we had tomorrow to finish anything else. He began telling me all of the things he was going to do the following day with the arrival of my sister and mother and told him not to wait. I actually said, “Get outside and finish your crap, we won’t be here tomorrow. I’ll be in the hospital giving birth. You have to have everything done tonight.” I then finished cleaning the house as he finished up some chores outside still looking at me out of the corner of his eye, not sure if he should believe me.

I then took my wonderful bath while listening to my hypnobirthing meditation and visualizing the labor, the birth, the speed of deliver, the healthy baby, etc. I got ready for bed and from approximately 10 pm to 11 pm I watched TV and applied the last of my natural inductions on myself. I rubbed Castor oil on my belly and then applied a hot compress to it as watched my show. The oil remained there for an entire hour as I reapplied the warm/hot compresses over it. Around 11 pm I wiped off some of the oil but left a good bit of it on and then made sure I had a long shirt on so that I wouldn’t get the oil all over the bed. As I climbed into bed I had my first good contraction. I left the TV on to watch reruns of Hulk Hogan’s reality show, back when he and his wife were still married, and ended up falling asleep dreaming of fighting Hulk Hogan in a ring. I was winning and every so often he would shoot me a jab to the belly.  Only in my dream I was in top shape, looking like Hillary Swank in Million Dollar Baby, my long hair back again and no baby belly. I kept thinking to myself how much that damn jab hurt every time Hogan gave me a right hook. It wasn’t until I woke up at 2:30 am and realized it wasn’t Hogan jabbing me, but my labor pains. I had managed to sleep through them for 3.5 hours and now I wasn’t able to sleep through another one. I woke my husband, who jumped up and freaked out just like in the movies. I’ve never seen him run so fast. I kept trying to tell him to slow down, that we had time, I wasn’t going to pop him out any moment, but he was on a high adrenaline rush. I took my time, got a shower, put my make up on, did my hair and by 4:45 am we were on our way to the hospital. I called my doula and acupuncturist and they met me there.

Needless, to say I had my little man at 9:51 am on Friday, June 6th. So, you can surmise that I either had implanted in my head from late September 2007 that he would be born on that day or the inducing worked. So, what exactly did I do??? There are several ways to do this but some very exact methods seem to come up over and over again that have worked for a lot of women. Again, do a search or review some of the links I have at the end of this blog and decide for yourself what you’ll want to do. I talked to my massage therapist and and a little to my doula about this but came up with my own procedure after reading what several midwives recommended. I purchased Black Cohosh  (I couldn’t find Blue Cohosh) tincture from my local herbal store. I then took 10-15 drops of the tincture under my tongue every hour from 9 am until bed. It doesn’t taste great and your contractions will begin to kick in about 15-20 minutes after you take it. Then they will subside until your next dose. You can take it with water or in tea, but to take it under the tongue is a fast way to ripen the cervix. I also added 2 primrose oil pills vaginally 3 times throughout the day. Morning, noon and night. Primrose oil can be taken vaginally after 38 weeks and it helps ripen the cervix as well. I continued to walk, hike and walk some more that day as well as getting an inducing pregnancy massage. Make sure you are seeing a good masseuse that has knowledge about the pressure points for inducing as well as being on his or her last minute list. I was able to call my masseuse a day in advance and she fit me right in to her schedule. I couldn’t get in to see my acupuncturist or I would have done that as well.

We also had sex. Semen contains prostaglandins which stimulates the cervix leading to contractions. We didn’t stop there. I did the nipple stimulation which releases oxytocin but never felt contractions from it. The last thing I tried was the castor oil. I would never drink this! The smell is horrible and I have no idea how women for centuries drank it to induce labor. I do know of a couple women who tried this and said it was horrorible, along with having excruciating gut pains from the oil coinciding with labor pains. However, my masseuse suggested before going to bed to rub castor oil on my belly and apply warm compresses. I did just that and an hour after my entire day of self-inducing my contractions started coming regularly; less than 12 hours later my little man was born.

While no one in the medical field will say any of these self-inducing procedures work, you will want to try to find someone to talk to before starting any of these. You can talk to your local midwife or doula, an acupuncturist and masseuse, or local homeopathic doctor. There can be side affects to some of these as well, so make sure you do your own due diligence and know what to expect. There is a ton of information online to help you with your decision making. I had also seen my acupuncturist a few days earlier to have some inducing acupuncture and had discussed some of these items with her. Don’t be alarmed if you see your acupuncturist and the inducing doesn’t work. Just like with the herbs, if your body isn’t ready the contractions won’t start.

SR, I hope that my dedication of this blog entry to you will help you on your quest to finding the right self-inducing method. Good luck and I can’t wait to read the text that your little one was born!
