If you are just tuning into this blog, you might want to go back and read the previous blog regarding toxins, SIDS, and crib mattresses.
In the US, we need to pay close attention to where and from whom we purchase our mattresses. Organic doesn’t always mean 100% pure; it can still have a certain percent of toxins within the mattress with only some of the product containing organic material. I had purchased a Serta organic baby mattress thinking I was doing the right thing. Now I come to realize that the filler that is organic, while everything else is still the same. The same toxic fire retardant and, while the vinyl is phthalate-free, it, too, contains toxins. I was completely mislead and feel duped once again on another “organic” product. A product that I even recommended to people! Ugh.
Fortunately for me, I had researched organic padding and had purchased online an organic cotton padding for the crib. At least I have my ‘wrap’ on the mattress and feel a little better knowing that I didn’t just have the sheet against the vinyl. I also had purchased organic sheets and always have a blanket on the bed between the baby and the sheet. So, I feel I did the best I could have with the misleading organic Serta mattress. On top of that, I never really used my crib until about 6 months of age. My house is such that our master bedroom is downstairs, while the kid’s rooms are upstairs. I had a cradle in my room for our son and used it exclusively at night for the first 6 months until I felt comfortable that he could be upstairs and that far away from me during the night. I only used the crib for naps during the day. The cradle was purchased online and included all of my organic bedding, organic wool puddle pads, and an all-natural latex cradle mattress. While I can’t remember where I purchased my products over two years ago, you can purchase most of those items at www.absolutelyorganicbaby.com.
Currently, l have a huge soft blanket that my son sleeps with and is usually on top of. But after reading the information on Serta, I will be purchasing a new mattress online, one that conforms to Dr. Sprott’s standard for my second child.
Dr. Sprott has created a standard by which we should heed to when looking for a safe mattress.
“Cot mattresses should comply with the following specifications:
1. No amount of any compound containing any phosphorus, arsenic or antimony should be added to any component of any mattress intended for use by infants.
2. No detectable phosphorus, arsenic and antimony.
3. The lower limits of detection should be stated in the analytical report and preferably should not be greater than 0.001 per cent.
4. Any claim made by a manufacturer that any cot mattress meets this requirement should be supported by an analytical report to this effect from a recognized analytical laboratory.
Mattress in this context means whatever the bedding, blankets, sheets are placed on, including sheepskins.” http://www.pnc.com.au/~cafmr/sprott/sids-gas.html
Now this sounds like a mouthful but I have found a couple of sites that appear to meet all of his standards. Here are some of the ones that I found:
http://store.absolutelyorganicbaby.com/organic-innerspring-crib-mattress.html
http://www.goodnightnaturals.com/crib-mattresses.html (I’m really liking the Twilight mattress with the natural latex core)
http://www.healthychild.com/store/pages.php?pageid=3 (I’m not crazy about the polyethylene but you can decide for yourself what you prefer)
Yes, these mattresses are more expensive, but what price do you put on the safety of your child? For me, the cost doesn’t matter. I’d pay a thousand dollars for the mattress if I knew it would protect my child from harmful toxins and quite possibly save his or her life. I’ll update you on which mattress I chose and how I like it in the upcoming weeks.
For now, may you be blessed with health, love, and be toxin-free.
