Tuesday night was pure hell. It took me 2 hours just to console and calm my son down enough to go to sleep. His collarbone was giving him such a hard time from his fall on Sunday. This was the worst we had seen him yet. We were pretty sure that he had a hairline crack, but there was no physical sign of injury and only occasionally did he complain during the day that it hurt. There was still no bruising or swelling. Upon complaining the only physical sign that something was wrong was a mild blotchiness on his skin around his collarbone, but not enough of a sign to really warrant any kind of alarm. He limited the movement of his right arm on his own and would whine if you picked him up wrong. This night was different though. He whimpered in and out of sleep until he finally was in a deep enough sleep that I could leave him alone.

Once he got to sleep, I went back to work to make up time from earlier in the day. This led me to ending my day at 2 am. Then as my feet hit the bed, he began crying and whimpering in his sleep. That was it. From 2 am until 4:30 am he moaned, groaned, cried and could not get comfortable enough to sleep. We laid in our bed and sleep finally over came us both sometime around 5 am. That lasted until sometime after 8 when I awoke with him propped up on top of me trying to sleep upright away from the pressure and pain in his collarbone. He then awoke around 9 am.

As I don’t have a family doctor, I called the next best thing, our chiropractor. I knew they had an x-ray machine in the office and would be able to help me get in and out fast unlike Quick Care. After scheduling an immediate appointment, I made my own sling for his arm, which he didn’t have any problems wearing and seemed to prefer the sling and the relief from the discomfort. By 11:15 am I was in our chiropractor’s office. Sure enough, we were in and out in less than 15 minutes with x-rays. Dr. Rick was his usual awesome self and took care of our son like his own. Within minutes we were reading the digital x-rays and could see the fracture. Wow, it was really fractured and not just a hairline crack. I couldn’t believe he had been walking around for days with only one night of obvious discomfort. This looked so painful. What a tough little guy! It was fractured from top down about an inch and a half up from his chest. Dr. Rick agreed that the sling was helping and so I put it back on him and we left waiting for a second opinion from their radiologist on anything else I might need to do.

By the time we got home, our son was acting like he had been for the past 4 days. He was trying to play around his sling, not showing any signs of pain. Once in awhile he would whimper or would move too fast and say “boo boo” and point to his collarbone but this was few and far between. By night fall, this began to change. For one, he refused to take his nap during the day and was then overly tired by 7 pm. Secondly, the pain in his collarbone began to act up. He was complaining more and once dinner was over we headed off to bed.

In anticipation of a long night, I quickly began going back to my list of herbs that I could give him to ease his pain before the night got away from us. Until now, all I had given him was some homeopathic inflammation and sore muscle tablets as we hadn’t known how severe the collarbone was. In light of the x-ray and seeing how bad a night could get, I wanted to be prepared and prep him for the night to come. I brewed some catnip tea for him as it is a natural relaxant, helps induce sleep and can help with pain. I was all out of chamomile or I would have brewed that along with it. Chamomile also helps induce sleep and can be great for healing wounds and for inflammation. Next, I pulled out Oregano oil, Lavender oil and a combination calming oil. Oregano is known to be one of the best herbs for pain management. Just a few drops can instantly stop pain. Lavender oil is also known to be a great herb for dealing with chronic pain. Place a few drops mixed with another oil onto the skin to allay pain and inflammation.  The combination oil was grabbed for just calming and soothing affects. I could have picked at least a dozen other herbs that would all work equally as well, but this is what I had on hand in my house.

Our son drank about half of the tea (it isn’t the best tasting so getting down any of it is great). I then dropped enough Oregano oil to cover the entire affected area and then dropped about 10 additional drops of lavender oil on top of that. I then rubbed into his feet the lavender oil and the combination oil once he was in bed. I had thought of using castor oil as well for pain but decided to use that should these others not have a great enough affect.

Within minutes of applying everything and drinking the tea my son was out along with me! I woke about 2 hours later to begin writing this blog. So, far he’s only had one outburst in the course of me writing and it was more of an overly tired slumber that combined his boo boo with dreaming. Since then he seems much more peaceful and less restless than he did last night. The true test will be in a few hours as his sleep deepens.

It is now off to bed for me. I’m exhausted and it is nearly 2:00 am. I wanted to make sure I wrote this blog to help promote natural herbal use over the commonly reached for prescription drugs or over-the-counter pain relievers. Natural remedies work so much better in my opinion and you rarely ever have to fear of side effects or over dosing on these types of remedies. You are in control of what you give and how much. You adjust accordingly to the age of the child. It is a lot easier in my opinion to monitor a few drops of an essential oil than to guess on cutting a pill in half or in quarters for a small child. Always check online and at multiple websites for answers. The internet is full of wonderful information on herbs and natural remedies. You can also ask your local herbal tea shop for information.

I’ll keep you posted on the progress of his healing collarbone. For now it is just a few more days before the worst is over for him. Then it will be downhill with healing.

May you be blessed with health, love and prosperity.
