For those of you who have been following my blog over the past week, you know that my 22-month-old son fractured his collarbone one week ago Sunday. He did so by rolling off of our dog and falling a mere 12 inches onto the grass, but landing directly on his shoulder. At first we knew he had a good ‘boo boo’ but didn’t know just how bad until we saw the chiropractor last Wednesday and an x-ray was taken. My son wasn’t in a lot of pain from Sunday through Tuesday and did not swell or bruise, but did have a rough night of sleeping on Tuesday night. After finding out that it was a fracture we began with herbal treatments such as oregano, lavender and calming oils.

As I had discussed the herbal alternatives in my last blog I wanted to give an update as to everything else we added to our regiment. I kept in touch with our chiropractor all day last Thursday as we tried to locate a figure 8 brace for a toddler in town with no luck. It had been recommended by a friend of mine, Lisa, who is a sports therapist, to obtain the sling to keep my son’s shoulders back so that his collarbone would heal correctly. After no luck in finding a brace locally our only option was to order one online or through a medical company in town. This would have resulted in the brace not even arriving until Monday at the earliest, which would have been over a week since the fracture. As the fracture was in the midst of healing, getting the brace at that point in time would have been too late to do any good. I went back to my friend, Lisa, and asked her for an alternative. She kindly explained to me how I could substitute a 3 in Ace bandage for the brace. This was a perfect alternative and ended up working like a charm. I began from the back and wrapped the bandage once around the left shoulder and then around the right and repeated for a second time over the left and right again and secured in the back with a safety pin. You can see this procedure done here as well as a clavicle brace. Make sure the brace is secure and that it has stabilized their shoulders. This being said, don’t make it too tight to cut off the circulation.

I then added his sling back to his right arm, however instead of making the typical sling I ended up wrapping my son’s arm first so that his hand was completely hidden and well-wrapped within the sling and then tied the sling around his neck. This way he couldn’t pick anything up or play with any toys with that hand. It worked great. He never tried to use that arm or hand and simply relied on his left for the next few days.

On Tuesday and Wednesday night, my son slept fine until 2 am when he awoke in pain and stayed up until 4-5 am each night. I had kept him propped up at night and he slept with me so that I could keep propping him up in the night to keep the inflammation down. This worked but he still ended up in pain. As your body needs to recover and most recovery takes place while you sleep, I had to resort to Motrin for kids for the next few nights before he went to sleep to make sure he had a good rest and that the inflammation would stay at bay. I am not fond of any over-the-counter drugs and 99% of the time opt for an all natural remedy. In this case, he needed to recover and heal and the natural herbs just weren’t cutting it. Once he had the motrin he fell fast asleep and slept through the night. By yesterday he was feeling really good in the morning and during the day and even asked for his nap and to go to bed at night, which was an awesome thing to see. He had been having so many problems before this accident with sleeping that this was a great sign of returning back to his normal sleeping pattern.

On Saturday, we saw the chiropractor, Dr. Rick. By then, my son had a very prominent lump on his collarbone, a sign of it healing. Dr. Rick checked his collarbone and then checked him to see if he was out of alignment any where else. He was out in his neck due to the sling, which was no surprise. He was taken care of with no pain being placed on his collarbone and we have a follow up appointment this coming Wednesday.

Wow, we finally are in a routine with the fractured collarbone and I now know what needs to be done to insure a speedy and correct recovery. Here are some of the key items to do should you end up in this situation:

* Get an x-ray to find out just how bad the fracture or break is.

* Buy or make a sling to keep their hand immobilized. If need be, wrap their hand so that they will not try to use it. Click here and see Figure 6-7.

* Buy a figure 8 sling or a 3 inch Ace bandage to wrap their shoulders and keep their shoulders in alignment to aid in proper healing.

* Apply all natural herbs to help keep the inflammation down and reduce pain, such as oregano, lavender, calming oil and catnip tea. Many other alternatives exist so research what works better for you.

* Use Children’s Motrin to help them sleep at night to aid in recovery and a good night’s sleep.

* Prop your child up in bed at night and during naps to keep the inflammation down while they sleep.

* Continue to see a chiropractor to maintain proper alignment during healing and after they stop using the brace and the sling.

* Wear the brace or bandage and the sling for at least 2 weeks after the break to allow for the fracture to set and begin healing. You can wear it longer but it is recommended that it is worn for at least the first 2 weeks.

* After a few days of healing you will notice a lump form. This is normal. It is the callus forming and should go away within the next 6-12 months.

* The pain should subside within 1-2 weeks but the bone will take 6-8 weeks to fully heal.

* After the first few days you can take the sling off to allow for some movement. The child will only use the arm as much as they see fit and can tolerate. A break now and then from the sling isn’t a bad thing.
