I’m down to ordering the diapers, which I’ll do at www.greenmountaindiapers.com. I researched loads of sites that sell diapers, but none gave me the images and information that this one does. Diapers can be an overwhelming challenge if you’ve never purchased them before. There are many to choose from and not a lot of people to help with decisions, as very few parents purchase cloth diapers nowadays. This site is the best for explaining every product, describing everything you could possibly need and offering packages for purchase…just in case you’re utterly lost. They give thorough directions on correct laundering, and advise what detergents to use to make the diapers last (I use BioKleen and Oxobrite, both of which you can find at Whole Foods). The pictures of the diaper covers are a huge help! By clicking on the link under the pictures you can get a plethora of information on each item. They show you what it looks like on a baby, how to use it, how to lay the diaper, and more. Priceless information, and by far the best diaper site I’ve seen to date.
Cloth Diapers and Covers
Though I had loads of cloth diapers, during my first pregnancy I didn’t purchase a tiny enough size for a newborn; instead, I used eco-friendly chlorine and gel free disposables for the first month (I was also a bit nervous about all of the new changes and thought waiting a month to begin cloth diapers would help ease me in). This time I’m purchasing the tiny newborn diapers, liners, covers and snappis. For those of you wondering, my diaper of choice is the Cloth-eez prefold organic diapers and my cover of choice is bummis Super Brites (for newborns until about 6 months, or whenever they turn to solid food). The extra leg lining is a must for babies who are nursing and tend to have runny
diapers. As my son began eating solid food I ended up purchasing the Bummis Super Whisper Wraps; because these covers are thicker they hold in more wetness. It is a toss up though, as the Super Brites give the added leg leakage protection, while the Super Whisper Wraps are more heavy duty, but tend to smell worse because they have cloth on the inside and not just protective covering. I used both during the course of 2 years depending on what my son was eating. You’ll soon realize what you like and prefer. Don’t buy everything at once, as it can be pricey! Instead, buy them as you go; you’ll know about a month in advance that it’s almost time to purchase the next size diaper and covers. As you do need several covers, purchase a few of each and try them out. They both work great and you can compare them firsthand.
Diaper liners and Doublers
I purchased the Bummis flushable diaper liners but found I didn’t like them. They seemed to shoot poop out of the diaper and cause more blowouts. Maybe it was just me, maybe it was the time period I was using them on my son. You might find this style works for you, as they are a pretty popular item. I recommend the hemp doublers for nighttime use; they keep a lot of the wetness off the baby. I make sure to have at least 5-6 on hand (6-8 for newborns). They’re also great for long trips when the baby is sitting for longer periods of time.
Snappis
Don’t forget your snappis! These are sheer heaven to use. If you’ve ever used pins you know of the pricks you get and the fear of pricking your baby. Not with these! I’ve been using snappis for 2 years now and absolutely love them. Easy for you (and babysitters and anyone else) to use. That’s the key to cloth diapering: the easier the better.
The Potty Pail
I also invested in The Potty Pail. While you can purchase something similar at your local home improvement store, it takes a lot of time to find everything you need and costs about the same (trust me, we priced it out). I ended up purchasing the whole deal from the Potty Pail and had my husband put it together. It took him all of 10 minutes to hook up.
For me, this is a life saver. I grew up with my mom and aunt washing diapers in the toilet by hand. YUCK! This makes it so much easier, plus, you can let diapers soak without the fear of your toddler flushing them down the toilet. You could also find a local diaper service that’ll wash your diapers for you. I’ve never used that service, but I know we have at least one in Reno. Check around; if you choose to go that route, I’m sure you’ll find someone willing to do the job.
Wet Bag
You can either invest in a wet bag or use plastic bags from the grocery store (be careful not to grab one with a hole in it!). I chose Mommy’s Touch Wet bags. It stays in my diaper bag and I empty it out upon returning home. I’ve never had any problems with it smelling or leaking.
Wipes
The first time around, I went with purchased wipes (see my blog on Nature’s Best Wipes). However, I’m switching to cloth wipes. I’ll probably purchase the Cotton Velour Wipes along with the spray bottle and the concentrate. As this is new for me, I’ll have to update you on how it goes! I should know in about 2 weeks after my shipment arrives and I’ve had time to experiment.
Diaper Bin
Lastly, make sure you have a bin with a lid for your dirty diapers. As my diapers begin to get dirty, I wash them out and place them into a storage container that I bought from Walmart. Just a plain old $7 storage bin with a lid is all you need, don’t buy anything fancy. These thick bins provide a ton of protection from the smelly diapers. After about 3 days of collecting diapers it’s time for a wash. Take your bin into the laundry room and dump them in the washer. It’s the only time you’ll really notice how well the bin works as the smell may briefly overwhelm you! Don’t worry, and hang in there. You’ll get used to it soon enough, just keep in mind it’s all worth it for your child.
That’s it for now when it comes to the diapering side of things. Remember, most of the items you purchase can be reused if you have another child. I’m off to finish ordering the rest of my newborn diapers. Good luck to you in the purchases you are about to make. The investment is well worth it!

I know! I just realized that I have 2 months left to get everything done! I just scheduled my 4D ultrasound to be done in 2 weeks. I forgot how much stuff I did the first time around. How did I ever do it all????
